Shame on America:Bin Laden’s Illegal Killing Underscores long tradition of Extra-Legal Assassinations

This blogger writes:the bin Laden shoot-down is a continuation of America’s long tradition of extra-legal assassination.

Fidel Castro target for CIA assassination squads

Let’s remember that  in the 1960s the CIA tried countless covert antics in attempting to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Why? Castro had posed no threat to America. He merely made the annoying mistake of being a communist in the hemisphere “owned by America.” How dare he! He must DIE!

Mosaddegh died CIA prisoner

The CIA in 1953, too, captured and imprisoned the democratically-elected prime minister of Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh,  keeping the ailing man – who  suffered from tuberculosis, anemia, bleeding ulcers, anxiety, exhaustion, and lack of proper nutrition – imprisoned until he died in 1967. As with Castro, Mosaddegh was incriminated for communist leanings, utterly contrary to the evidence of his long career as a parliamentarian.

HAPPILY, there is much clement commentary appearing on the Web now, condemning the USA for its illegal  assassination of bin Laden. The act was clearly in contravention of the Geneva Conventions (bin Laden apparently did not resist, so his death was murder, not a legitimate act of war).

America is only a pretender to the aims of Peace and Justice.❜

Cheney’s Gang

Larry Elder of Creators Syndicate writes: Osama bin Laden was a) killed by a unit overseen by what New Yorker reporter Seymour Hersh denounced as Vice President Dick Cheney’sexecutive assassination ring,” which was b) sent into action based on intel derived from the now-outlawed “enhanced interrogation techniques,” which were c) used on detainees captured during the George W. Bush administration, who were d) being held in now-outlawed “secret prisons” or in the intended-to-be-closed Gitmo.

Greg Barns of The Drum Option writes: The killing of Osama Bin Laden provides a disturbing reminder that the West’s rhetoric on the universality of human rights and the rule of law is easily sacrificed at the altar of expediency.

Huffington Post: James Love writes : Justice and Assassination

With Jon Stewart, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and UN head Ban Ki-moon endorsing the “operation,” it appears to have support in many quarters. But if this was an operation to kill, rather than capture bin Laden, and if his death was not necessary, but actually ordered, then Limbaugh is correct in calling this an assassination, and it is not a credit to the United States to have carried out an assassination, even of bin Laden.

The killing may have political benefits for President Obama. But the longer term legitimation of assassination is risky, and undermines longer term goals of making society more just and more peaceful. I am disappointed other political leaders cannot say this.

Huggington Post: Bill Quigley writes: Assassination of US Muslim Cleric Illegal Immoral and Unwise

Agents of the United States are openly trying to assassinate Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, a US citizen, while he is in hiding in Yemen. Despite what the apologists for assassination argue this is illegal, immoral and unwise.
